How to set your business up so it does not depend on you

There is a simple test for whether your business is set up well. Leave for two weeks. If anything important stops, breaks, or waits for your approval, you have identified your next project.

The work does not have to leave your desk entirely. Some decisions are genuinely yours. The problem is when everything becomes yours by default because nobody wrote down how else it could work.

Start with the things that happen every week. Invoicing, scheduling, client follow up, onboarding, reporting. Pick the one that currently creates the most questions, and write it down. Trigger, steps, owner, done. One page is enough.

Then hand that page to someone else and watch where they pause. Every pause is not a failure of the person. It is a missing sentence in the instructions. Fix the instructions, not the person.

A business that runs without you is not a business you have abandoned. It is the only kind that can grow past the number of hours you personally have.
