The numbers every owner should look at every month
Sep 2026 · 4 min read

Most owners open their books looking for one thing: did we make money? That is a fair question, but it is a lagging indicator. By the time revenue tells you something is wrong, the wrong has already happened.
The more useful numbers are the ones that move first. How many people reached out this month? What percentage of them got a reply in one business day? What did you spend to earn a new client? How long does it take from first contact to a signed agreement?
None of these require an accounting degree. They require a simple list you look at on the same day every month, before the month feels like history. The discipline is not in the math. It is in looking before you are forced to.
The goal is not to become a data person. The goal is to stop being surprised. A business that checks its gauges regularly can correct course while correction is still cheap.
Pick five numbers that describe your business right now. Put them somewhere visible. Look at them on the first of every month, and ask what story they are telling before anyone else does.
