The follow up habit that costs nothing and changes everything
Jul 2026 · 4 min read

Almost every business owner can name the marketing they paid for last quarter. Very few can name the people who raised a hand and never heard back. That second number is usually the more expensive one.
Follow up feels optional because nothing visibly breaks when it does not happen. Nobody sends an invoice for the conversation that went cold. The cost shows up later as a flat month you cannot explain.
What actually happened is simpler. Someone asked a question on a Tuesday, you meant to reply Wednesday, and by Friday they had already talked to someone else who replied in an hour. Speed reads as competence.
The fix is rarely more discipline. It is a simple sequence. Decide how fast the first reply goes out, how many times you reach back, and what each touch says. Then let the system do the remembering instead of your memory.
When members bring numbers into the room, follow up is almost always the cheapest thing left on the table. It costs nothing to add and it compounds every month you keep it.
